Hello Rick, The heating element can be replaced without pulling the unit but if you have never done this job before, it is rather difficult. You also have to have very small hands in order to reach the element nuts. I would recommend the unit removal to get this done without any issues. As for the control board, it is in the door panel so of course you don't have to pull the unit to do this part of the repair.
