By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18027975
Manufacturer Part Number: WP4387938

This compressor overload is a thermal protector that opens the circuit if the compressor overheats or draws excessive current. Replacing a failed overload restores reliable starts and helps prevent compressor damage when your refrigerator won't cool.

  • Protects the compressor by interrupting power during overheat/overcurrent conditions
  • Common symptoms: refrigerator not cooling, compressor won't start, repeated clicking or brief hum then shutoff
  • Mounts on the compressor terminal and works alongside the start relay on applicable models
  • Built for proper fit and dependable operation in the start circuit
What's included: One overload protector
  • Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear access panel to reach the compressor
  • Note wire positions; pull the old overload straight off the compressor pin
  • Push the new overload fully onto the correct terminal and reconnect wiring/terminal cover
  • Restore power and verify the compressor starts without repeated clicking

Hi Ray. Use a volt/ohm meter part # MA-DM1 to assist you in your diagnostics. Use the R x 1 scale and put the 2 meter leads together momentarily to verify the meters ohm scale is working. You normally read .01 or .02 ohms resistance in the leads itself - normal. This tells you the meters 9v battery is good. If you are hearing a heavy "Click" every few seconds then either the overload is bad or the compressor windings are bad. After you remove the overload and let it cool completely, it should read approx. 4-6 ohms cold. If it rattles as well then the ptc disk inside is bad. Overload part # WP4387938. Thank you.
