Hello William, This design unit does not require a bypass plug. Water will dispense without one but it is not recommended for the unit to be supplied through a Reverse Osmosis system. You see, the water valve is closed by the water pressure. Since the water pressure through a RO system is substantially diminished, there is a high probability of an overfill situation in the icemaker since the water valve will close too slowly.
