Manufacturer Part Number: WP338906

The Flame Sensor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas dryers. This component plays a critical safety role by monitoring the presence of the gas burner flame during the drying cycle.

Causes of needing to replace the flame sensor can include normal wear and tear over extended use, exposure to high temperatures or corrosion, or physical damage to the sensor itself.

Symptoms that may indicate a faulty flame sensor include:

  • The dryer not heating or producing heat properly
  • Error codes related to the gas system or ignition failure
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore gas dryer models.

Answer

Ryan, If the flame sensor was faulty, the igniter wouldn't stop glowing, or it wouldn't glow at all. Power reaches the valve assembly by the molex connection to the valve. The coil assembly and igniter receive the line voltage (120 VAC) when the flame sensor is "closed"and develop a magnetic draw through the coil. The igniter begins to glow and heat, the secondary coil is bypassed by the flame sensor. When the igniter is hot enough two things occur, the igniter resistance decreases, the heat from the igniter causes the flame sensor switch to open. The fame sensor contacts are open the secondary coil is no longer bypassed it's now in series with the igniter and booster coil, the low resistance of the igniter allows the voltage to drop across the secondary coil, a small percentage of voltage is also dropped across the igniter and booster coil. The secondary coil opens and releases the gas from the valve the gas, passing over the hot igniter cuses the gas to ignite and the burner to activate and burn. You may want to replace the flame sensor, but if it cycles off and on consistently chances are it's OK and you have a loose connection in the gas valve wire harness or an intermittent gas supply problem.
