The Flame Sensor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas dryers. This component plays a critical safety role by monitoring the presence of the gas burner flame during the drying cycle.

Causes of needing to replace the flame sensor can include normal wear and tear over extended use, exposure to high temperatures or corrosion, or physical damage to the sensor itself.

Symptoms that may indicate a faulty flame sensor include:

  • The dryer not heating or producing heat properly
  • Error codes related to the gas system or ignition failure
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore gas dryer models.

For Whirlpool Flame Sensor (Part Number: OEM18024891)

Julie for Model Number MGDE300VW0

Sorry for repeat question entered question before I finished. Dryer takes longer to dry cloths. No error code is produced. Took off lower panel and dryer heater assembly appears to be functioning properly. Measured temperatures at the exhaust outlet and got the following: Low 107 (F), Med 112 (F), High 118 (F). The table show shut off temp higher (125,140,155). Ran dryer empty on high setting for 15 minutes and it never reached the design cut off temp of 155 so the the heater never turned off.

Julie, the exhaust thermistor WP8577274 would need to be tested for resistance and it should measure between 8.5 to 10.5 K Ohms at around 80°F. If the exhaust thermistor tests good, the wire harness would need to be inspected for any broke or loose sections. If the main harness W10111011 checks ok, the most likely failure would be the main control WPW10174745.

Jim, as the burner is cycling on and off, the blower wheel WP697772 would need to be inspected to ensure that it is not partially clogged or broken. If that is good and the drum rotates properly, the venting running from the interior wall to the outside of the house would need to be cleared as it would likely be an air flow issue.

Richard, Thanks for the question!!! The most likely failure for what you have described is the ignitor. Your model uses part number 279311. If you need help with further troubleshooting check out our YouTube video for Gas Dryers with No Heat here: https://youtu.be/zskjinuElvA

Hello Bill, the flame sensor is basically a switch, it should have continuity between the terminals measured with a multimeter. If it is open there will be no power to the ignitor.

Hello Bab, check the wiring terminal connections on all the thermostats and burner parts, that they are snug, it sounds as if one or more are loose.

Tammy, as the flame sensor would only open once the ignitor reaches a specific temperature, it would be likely that the ignitor 279311 is not able to reach the temperature necessary.

Spatialman for Model Number wgd8200yw2

Dryer check vent light comes on every use. Dryer never gets hot. Maybe warm sometimes. Cleaned out all external venting as well as taking part dryer and cleaning inside. Found decent amount of lint at the bottom. Put back together and same issue. Took off vent from back of dryer and ran without and had lots of air blowing out and exact same issue. Looked at the burner and noticed its flame starts then turns off after about 10 seconds. Then keeps cycling and turning off. Seems to be either the valve or flame sensor. Any thoughts? And how would this be related to the check vent light? Air flow is really strong coming out. Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Spatialman, the dryer burner can not be checked for proper operation if the front panel is removed, as it disrupts the burner airflow. With the burner erratically cycling with the front panel installed, that can be caused by a weak flame sensor WP338906 or gas valve coils WPW10368268.

Thezackkl For this issue, you will want to check the flame sensor for continuity. If there is no continuity then this will be a faulty flame sensor. If the sensor checks ok then this will most likely be faulty gas coils.

Jean, at room temperature the radiant sensor WP338906 should test as a closed circuit. As it is reading as an open circuit, the radiant sensor has certainly failed and can cause the current issue.
