Alejandro for Model Number LER4634BQ1 My whirlpool dryer stopped working after I saw it smoking from the back. I discovered that the black wire terminating at the terminal block burnt. This black wire goes to the timer on one end. Would the timer cause this if it is bad? Or is there another cause? This wire is only burnt after the Y section on the black wire leading to the terminal block. No other sections or wires are damaged?
Answer Alejandro, We wouldn't expect the timer to be the issue, It's only a switch and doesn't really "carry a load". You may want to check the Red wire(terminal R) from the timer to the thermostats and heater element. The most likely and common issue for this type of complaint, is or was a loose connection at the terminal block. After years of heat and expansion and contraction, the mounting bolts and screws loosen and can create a high amperage draw, causing the wires to overheat and burn. Repair the burnt wire as best possible(shrink wrap and solder) reinstall the power cord and make sure the mounting nuts and bolts are good and tight, and you should be fine. Read More...
