By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18028053
Manufacturer Part Number: WP4391974

Defrost timer that advances the refrigerator's defrost cycle at roughly six-hour intervals to help prevent excessive frost buildup and keep cooling consistent. Replaces a failed timer to restore regular defrost scheduling. What it does:

  • Advances the defrost cycle so the heater can melt frost from the evaporator on a timed schedule.
  • Helps prevent heavy ice buildup that can reduce airflow and cooling performance.
  • Common symptoms of a failing timer: excessive frost or ice accumulation, compressor running constantly, or inconsistent temperatures.
  • Works with mechanical defrost systems to alternate between cooling and defrost intervals.
What's included: One defrost timer. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid electrical shock.
  • Handle connectors and wiring carefully; ensure all terminals are fully seated.
  • Mounting hardware and connector types can vary by model—retain original fasteners and note wiring positions before removal.

Bill for Model Number Admiral NT23B8SV

A refrigerator repairman has replaced the defrost timer in our Admiral NT23B8SV with Whirlpool WP4391974. But it is not defrosting--the freezer is at zero degrees F while the fridge is at 65 degrees. He did *not* use the extra black wire, since all 4 terminals match the 4 correct wire colors in the plug. Directions say "For 6 hour continuous defrost cycle, attach loose lead to terminal 1." Does he need to do this to make the defrost timer work properly? How can the loose lead be attached when all 4 terminals are already taken?

Answer

Bill If your referring to the jumper wire, it is used when there is a three wire hookup. The black lead attached to the timer will depend on your model and wiring diagram as to where it goes. The loose lead slides over a terminal and a wire is still able to be connected, and yes it has to be connected.
