Part Number: OEM18028053
Manufacturer Part Number: WP4391974

Defrost timer that advances the refrigerator's defrost cycle at roughly six-hour intervals to help prevent excessive frost buildup and keep cooling consistent. Replaces a failed timer to restore regular defrost scheduling. What it does:

  • Advances the defrost cycle so the heater can melt frost from the evaporator on a timed schedule.
  • Helps prevent heavy ice buildup that can reduce airflow and cooling performance.
  • Common symptoms of a failing timer: excessive frost or ice accumulation, compressor running constantly, or inconsistent temperatures.
  • Works with mechanical defrost systems to alternate between cooling and defrost intervals.
What's included: One defrost timer. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid electrical shock.
  • Handle connectors and wiring carefully; ensure all terminals are fully seated.
  • Mounting hardware and connector types can vary by model—retain original fasteners and note wiring positions before removal.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer, Defrost (6 Hr.) (Part Number: OEM18028053)

1 Answer

Karl, for your model the jumper wire would go to terminal 2 on the defrost timer.

1 Answer

D Curtis, the timer would be wired with the black wire jumper going to terminal 1 along with the white wire. The blue wire should go to terminal 3, yellow wire to terminal 2, and the orange wire to terminal 4. It is possible that a wire has come loose as the compressor receives voltage directly from the temperature control rather than the defrost timer.

Elmer K. for Model Number BNT1494 Old Admiral refrigerator

The Admiral model number is not recognized by any supplier that I tried. The defrost timer will run intermittently and does not defrost the unit regularly. The old defrost timer is similar to model WP4391974. It has 4 connector prongs, prongs 1 and 3 are for the coil, 2 and 4 to the contacts. 2, 1 and 4 have equal spacing between them. A wider spacing for 3 and 4. I can adapt the mounting of the timer if the electrical connections are the same as the old timer. Please confirm the connections on WP4391974. Thanks Elmer

Hello Elmer, I'm sorry but this model number is not coming up for us as valid. This could be because it is simply too old to come up. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Bill for Model Number Admiral NT23B8SV

A refrigerator repairman has replaced the defrost timer in our Admiral NT23B8SV with Whirlpool WP4391974. But it is not defrosting--the freezer is at zero degrees F while the fridge is at 65 degrees. He did *not* use the extra black wire, since all 4 terminals match the 4 correct wire colors in the plug. Directions say "For 6 hour continuous defrost cycle, attach loose lead to terminal 1." Does he need to do this to make the defrost timer work properly? How can the loose lead be attached when all 4 terminals are already taken?

1 Answer

Bill If your referring to the jumper wire, it is used when there is a three wire hookup. The black lead attached to the timer will depend on your model and wiring diagram as to where it goes. The loose lead slides over a terminal and a wire is still able to be connected, and yes it has to be connected.

Jon, Unfortunately there is no technical information on this unit since the manufacturer is out of business and all the information went with them.

Tom, This will be determined by whether you have a 3 or 4 wire hook up. If it is a 3 wire then place the loose lead to terminal number 2, if it is a 4 wire hookup then place it on terminal number 1.

Ann for Model Number Glastender BB60-L6-GSH-RR Serial-22-45596

Glastender undercounter cooler/refrigerator (commerical) I purchased this part for a replacement defrost timer. Recommended by my local supplier. I was confused about what wires go where. The loose black wire goes to led # 1 or 2? Where does the jump wire go? Led 3 & 4? I am so confused. Hello Jerry. We can only recommend using the manufacturer replacement timer on the unit. In your case it is an ADC WP2304093 for the unit. Thank you.
