Hello Marc, The black wire should be attached to terminal number 1 in order for it to go into defrost every 8 hours. This is the way I always have hooked up the timer. Even when the units' tech sheet calls for the accumulative wiring, it does not do the efficient job that the continuous wiring does. It prevents any accumulation of ice that isn't removed from the evaporator coils that will reduce unit efficiency.
