John, Before you replace the timer, try this : Put the timer dial in the timed dry setting on the control panel, and start the dryer, let it run 10 to 15 minutes, if the timer dial / skirt advances or moves, then you can be 99% sure the issue is not the timer, and based on your post information, then you'll need to check the gas valve coils resistance and operation. If the dryer does not heat properly in a "auto dry" setting, the timer will not advance. Thanks and Good Luck
