By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18027888
Manufacturer Part Number: WP4375286

This is a high-voltage transformer that steps up electrical power to the level needed to drive the magnetron in a microwave oven. It converts standard household voltage to the high voltage required for microwave energy generation. Replace this part if the microwave runs but does not heat food, makes unusual humming or buzzing sounds, or trips the circuit breaker during operation.

Michael for Model Number KEMC308KSS01

I replaced the control unit and touch panel because they were faulty. Everything works fine now except that the microwave does not heat. Sounds normal, there is no burnt smell (like some of the questions suggest) and there are no error indicators on the screen. The microwave door appears alright. I tried shutting it harder and lighter (if I don't close enough I get door message, when I close well there is no door message.) This is important: Once or twice it did heat just fine (pretty hot actually) but the last so many tries, it has not heated. I've read some of the other questions and it seems that I may have a dead magnetron or transformer (there are two it seems) or capacitor or line fuse? Please advise.

Answer

Michael,

The issue could certainly be caused by a faulty magnetron which you can test and make sure that it is good. You would be looking for a resistance across the terminals of <1 ohm. Also test the thermostat on the magnetron to make sure that the thermostat has continuity. The diode could also cause the unit to not operate but would normally have a vibration type of noise associated with trying to cook.
