A magneto armature, also called a magneto charger, is a device that provides electric voltage to a spark plug in lieu of a battery. Small gasoline-powered engines that do not have batteries use magneto charges to produce the power to fire a spark plug, combusting the fuel mixture and turning over the engine. If an engine simply will not start, it's a good idea to use a multimeter to test the magneto. Typically, the magneto sits atop the engine housing and is attached to the engine coil.
