How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP5788185 / MWFP Refrigerator Water Filter

Having the model # made it easy which shelf I need and the water filter. They were shipped on a very timely manner and they worked perfect. 

I followed the very clear, precise directions and removed the old one and screwed in the new one. Worked perfectly the whole procedure. 

Found new filter using fridge model # and looking at exiting filter. I still have the fridge owner's manual so had lots of info. Searching this website was easy too! Replacing filter was simple - except the adapter came off with the old one, so I was confused for a minute. I looked at some video and pictures on ApplicancePartsPros just to confirm everything, then put adapter back in and attached new filter. DONE! 

Replace water filter . water inlet valve 

Turned water off to the refrigerator, unscrewed old filter screwed in new one, turned water back on. 

Ordered new parts and new filter. Watched the 'how to video' which was GREAT! Gathered tools and jumped in. Job went smoothly.

Replaced damper assembly using the how to videos and it was a piece of cake. I looked like a pro since watching it be done before attempting to do it on my own. 

Replaced the water filter and the water inlet valve. 

This problem occurs when a solenoid that opens the ice dispenser door fails. I recently replaced it for the second time with a replacement part from Appliance Parts Pros. Our GE Monogram fridge is about 10 years old, so the solenoid lasts about 5 years. It's easy to replace. After turning off power to the fridge, pry off the cover to the dispenser unit, then remove the electronics panel by lifting from the bottom. Disconnect three electrical plugs and place the module aside. Remove four screws holding the dispenser door assembly, set that aside. The solenoid can now be removed and replaced. Tip: I took pictures with my phone along the way to help with reassembly. During reassembly, the solenoid piston has to engage the dispenser door properly. The dispenser unit was moldy, so it was a good opportunity to clean it. Problem solved.
