How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP5788185 / MWFP Refrigerator Water Filter

I first went on line and through YouTube found several possible causes- frozen water line in Freezer door, leak in cold water tank in the refrigerator, problem with the water-tank to freezer door water line. Per video instructions, I pulled the bottom on the refrigerator and found that the water fine from the tank to the freezer door had broken. An on-line chat with an AppliancePartsPros representative lead me to the correct parts and the video on how to fix my specific problem. Repair was quick and easy - all I needed was a screw driver and a razor blade and the Water Tank Tube and Union Connector which ordered and the repair itself took 30 min. Great to have water from the refrigerator again. 

I ordered the replacement parts from you and replaced them and now it functions properly. I must say though, I was especially happy that I received my order from you very quickly. I was surprised how fast I received them Thank you. 

Had to remove all three food drawers and the back panel behind the drawers (4 screws). The water tank comes with the associated tubing which would typically require access to the back of the fridge to run the new lines. Instead I clipped the existing lines inside the fridge. Then I clipped the lines off the new tank so they would line up with the old lines. I then used a 5/16" OD compression coupling (Lowes or Home Depot) to connect the ends of the tubing together. The joined tubes are hidden behind the panel and are water and pressure tight. This was MUCH easier than pulling the fridge and rerunning 10ft of tubing. 

Replace ice maker assembly! 

Watched several on-line repair videos. Saw ice on the water tank in the fridge side. Thawed it with hair dryer, and the tank had cracked. Ordered a new water tank, and replaced it and thawed the dispenser area on the freezer door inside and out. Took 30 minutes alternating inside and out then the line melted clear and worked fine. When routing the tank water lines you'll need to guide them past the solenoid from the back underneath, and there is a slot for the water line that runs to the door in the plastic flap that runs underneath the fridge which the line must run through or it will seem too short to make the connection. Also open both door when working on the water line connections in from. It is very tight in back connecting to the valve you'll get cut easily. 

Bought a new vegetable drawer. It was an expensive fix but well worth it because now my drawer doesn't fall when I open it. That was a pain especially since the drawer is so huge. Love the fact that it's a big drawer but the drawback is that the drawer gets so heavy that it broke the plastic on the back of the drawer. I noticed that the new drawer was reinforced in that area. So that is very appreciated. My fridge is like new again :) 

Did some research online, watched repair video on AppliancePartsPros Video.com and fixed it. I replaced the solenoid valve and the ice maker in less than 30 minutes. It really was as simple as swapping out the old for the new. AppliancePartsPros provided all the necessary parts and information for the repair the first time around. Awesome company! 

I replaced the Ice Door Assembly, but had two problems. 1. The video was only about electronic touch controls, my frig is older and had mechanical controls. Disassembly was more of and event in discovery, but videos did help give me the general idea of how the system worked. 2. The new Assembly would not lay flat against the retainer mechanism which caused it to hang up on the discharge chute and not close leaving a big hole for invasive warm air. First I temporarily shimmed it with small screws, then found some small plastic tile shims that I cut and slipped into the space between the retainer and space above in Assembly's plastic retainer snaps. This snugged it up and I hope a little pressure and gravity will keep them in place. 

Replaced the water tank, it had a cracked in it. I also replaced the water filter. it is working fine now. 

By watching the how-to video I was able to fix the refrigerator, although it was a simple fix I am much appreciative for the how to video that made the fix simple. I made my dad proud by being able to fix his refrigerator on my own.
