How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4510029 / W10239357 Cooktop

Used the leveling legs and shims to raise the cooktop above the counter tops. This allowed me to access the screws and replace the top without having to disconnect the down draft fan (the hardest part!)

Ordered replacement. Followed You Tube video and it went perfectly. 

Repair was simple. Turn off breaker supplying 240 VAC to the stove. Disconnect blower exhaust hose. Pull stove out so you can work on it. Remove six screws holding front panel to stove and lower it out of the way. The wires will support it. Unplug two connectors for left and right heating elements. Remove screws on sides and back holding cook top to range. Remove cook top and turn ut upside down on counter. Remove the eight screws holding the heating elements to the cooktop. Remove the "top is hot" indicator light. Transfer the heating elements and associated wiring to the new cook top. Four hands are helpful doing this. Replace screws holding elements to cook top. Replace indicator light. Replace new cook top on top of the range. Replace screws on left, right, and back sides. Reconnect plugs connecting heating elements to controls. Reposition the control panel and replace six screws. Turn on power. Test each heating element. If OK, then put stove back in place and reconnect blower exhaust hose. 

Replacing the cooktop glass takes about 20 minutes and the only tool needed is a 1/4" nut driver. Best with an impact driver or drill, because you'll be "tapping" the holes in the sheetmetal of the new top. 1. Pull out the unit from the cabinet. Disconnect the Power, or turn off the circuit breaker. 2. remove 3 1/4" sheetmetal screws from each side, about an inch below the glass 3. remove 2 more from the back. 4. carefully lift the front up enough to disconnect the wire harness for burners on left and right 5. Turn over the glass and remove the screws holding the burners in place. There are 2 for each burner. 6. Transfer the 4 burners and wire harness to the replacement top (easier with a helper) 7. Replace all the screws, replace the top, reconnect the wire harness and put all the screws back in place. 

ApplianceParts Pros sent me a replacement glass cooktop for the range. Opened the box on Sunday and the replacement cooktop was cracked and broken. Called and spoke to Andrew in Customer service who ordered me a replacement part that arrived two days later on Tuesday. no hassle, very easy to get the replacement. Just needed to send a picture of the damaged box and cooktop. Did not have to return the damaged part which would have been a major issue as it's a rather large box. And two days later I had the replacement part. Great experience and worry free and Andrew from customer service did an exceptional job on the phone and taking care of business. 

Not too hard, total of 8 screws hold top on, hex head 1/4", if you don't have nut drivers then pick up a set of bits at local home improvement store. Screws, 3 each side and two in back, ones in back are recessed behind access holes. Slide unit out to gain access, take out screws, lift top near front, two wiring harness connectors, one left and one right, disconnect them. Lay top upside down on flat surface protected with towels or throw rugs with old and new side by side. Two screws hold each burner, remove them. With an assistant, lift all burners at once and move to new top. Also move the square pads that are under the burner connectors to new top. Recommend ordering the pads with the top to replace any that may have deteriorated, I had one. Reverse process to reinstall. BTW service and delivery by AppliancePros.com was excellent, from order to my door in less than a week for an out of stock item. Sipped by FedEx no charge. Price was less than competitors. 

The parts were really easy to replace. As a contractor I feel like I have a good grip on handyman stuff. My helper installed this part. Very easy to replace.
