How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6893312 / W11384469 Refrigerator Door Switch

Replaced the switch. 

Ordered a replacement part that I found out they replaced with a sturdier switch which is definitely an improvement. The switch was a plug and play type of part. 

Easy 10 minute install! Unplug the power. Disconnected the old switch! And installed the new one and plugged in the power. Worked immediately. Easy DIY fix. 

The video showed this to be an easy fix. Turned out to be fairly difficult level 4 of 5. I tried to do it myself as the video showed it to be very easy. There was no way I could do it. Had to ask my electrician, next-door neighbor, to help me with it as I could not do it myself. He had considerable difficulty removing the old switch from the refrigerator, just inside the door. The video is really not accurate as far as difficulty. With my neighbor John's help the repair was completed successfully and the refrigerator light comes on correctly when the door is opened. 

Got a new part and watched the installation video on AppliancePartsPros.com website. My situation was not as easy as depicted in the video. It was much harder to remove the switch. The hole for the switch was a bit small so the retaining lock would not collapse far enough to let it out easily. Also, the factory had put some glue and foam strip on the top side of the switch which interfered with the removal. Brute force finally won out with only minor damage to the corner of the switch cut out. Also, the refrigerator door was in the way of getting good leverage on the switch frame with a screwdriver. Installing was easy and the new switch works great. The job took about ten minutes longer than expected. 

Replaced door light switch on both doors. On this built-in KitchenAid refrigerator model, it is located above the refrigerator in the compressor/coil space easily accessible by removing the covers which lift right off. Switches are in the opposing front corners and are triggered by a paddle attached to each door. Removed the 1/4 inch screws, bracket, cover to expose the old switches to swap out with the new ones. 

I pulled it out with screwdriver, took it loose, attached the new switch and popped it back in place. 

I un-screwed light bulbs to keep refrigerator from getting so hot.. Repairman called in a few days and said parts unavailable. I asked for refund but they told me that was for diagnosis...duh! I looked on internet and found your website and videos. Ordered new switch which came in the next day. I replaced switch, removed light bulb holder and cleaned it up. Installed it and is working perfectly. Found a new light bulb holder on eBay and ordered in case the old one goes bad. Thanks for video and switch! 

Ordered the part which arrived promptly, watched the youtube video, and replaced it. Took 5 minutes.
