How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985208 / W10822278 Defrost Timer

Through research (especially on this website), I narrowed the problem down to a faulty defrost timer on this "old box". It's been an "old reliable" and a replacement defrost timer was still available, so I ordered it from this website. It arrived here in a VERY timely fashion. Although NOT the "Maytag Repairman" watching the helpful video on how to install this on this website made the repair VERY simple. 

I found that the timer was bad. I replaced it with a new defrost timer from Appliances Parts Pros. 

Reading all the related troubleshooting tips on their website, and others, I was informed the problem was related to possibly 3 items. I ordered the 2 more common parts, a defrost timer and defrost bimetal. I couldn't see much because of all the frost, but once I had it defrosted , it was obvious the "defrost bimetal" had "popped". I had watched the repair video, which showed the repair done on exactly the same model I have. It took only minutes to replace the part and the problem was solved. Thanks!

Had replaced defrost timer six months ago. The same problem so replaced again. Still not right, still at 60 degrees. Reread instructions (that you have to download), mentioned frost and freezing up and compressor damage. Noticed vent openings in the bottom of the freezer covered up with frost and ice. Unplugged, left the freezer door open with a fan blowing into that area. Four hours later it was totally defrosted and plugged back in. A couple of hours later frig temp was 40 degrees. Don’t know if 6-month-old defrost timer bad, took apart and contacts looked okay so maybe motor died. Cost only $13.95 so how high can the quality be? Anyway drinks cold now!

I watched your video. Hardest problem was that the refrigerator is almost 40 years old but your sales team track down the parts and I was able to install them without very much trouble 

I ordered a new timer for my 1974 coldspot refrigerator after checking with AppliancePartsPros.com to see if it would work. It fit perfectly and works great.
