How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985208 / W10822278 Defrost Timer

It's a 21 year old Kenmore, so I expected issues. I had replaced the defrost timer previously, but since the cold control part was available I decided to replace it at the same time. Took about 20 minutes. So far the diagnosis was correct, refrigerator and freezer are operating fine. 

I replaced the defrost timer. 

Replaced the defrost timer that apparently was not coming out of defrost mode. This was a very simple, inexpensive fix. Worked perfectly. 

Put all 3 sensors in, works like new. Frig is 23 yrs old. 

Replaced the defrost timer. 

Replaced timer. Target, operates like new. 

Replaced defrost timer, works better than it has in years. 

Replace defrost timer. 

New timer was needed. It arrived very timely. The hardest part of repair was wiring new part up. The new part fit several wiring options and came with no instructions. Once I found website information on package that took me to wiring instructions. I was good to go. 

I used the evaporator fan/motor and the bimetallic defrost sensor. It took longer to remove all the shelving and the ice bin than to do the actual repair. I allowed the ice to thaw and runoff while I worked. I had difficulty reaching the back of the freezer compartment because I am so short. Had to recruit my grandson for those parts. It was close quarters to work in there splicing wires for the sensor. It would have been easier with properly applied wire nuts. By the way, I'm a 72-year-old grandma (pretty handy in my day). If I can do it, you can too!
