How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3109394 / 4388932 Defrost Control Board

Condenser was encased in solid block of ice due to automatic defrost not working. Replaced thermostat and ADC control board. Working fine now. Most tedious part was using a heat gun to melt all the ice off the condenser coils. You will need a couple small wire nuts to splice the new thermostat into the existing harness (they are not included). Service tech wanted over $400 to repair, fixed it myself for half that. Thanks ! 

After checking repair sites on the internet, I figured that either the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater or the defrost control board was at fault. I ordered and replaced the defrost thermostat which I found out didn't fix the problem. Then I checked the resistance of the defrost heater which checked out good. I ordered the Control Board as the last resort, replaced it and the problem was solved. On all repairs I referred to helpful video sites. There was a little confusion on replacing the control board as the video shown was for repair of a similar model refrigerator. on my KitchenAid, there was a bezel over the front which had to be removed to gain access to remove and replace the control board. Ater a visual inspection of the replaced control board, I noticed that a relay component had a burnt spot on it. 

The unit is 15 years old. Instead of just replacing the Adaptive Defrost Control Board , I opted to replace all parts related to include the Heating Element, Defrost Thermostat, and the Evaporator Fan Motor. I feel it was worth the extra money and piece of mind not to worry about what would fail next. In the long run it is was cheaper to replace those parts than replace all the food lost after it failed while we were on vacation! This company is just awesome! Great customer support and the standard shipping was delivered to my door in less than 24 hours of being placed! 

First of all you guys are awesome ; I ve had a local appliance company working for 3 months trying to fix my frig. Every time they came out they had the wrong part . So I have been getting out the old blow dryer twice a week to defrost my appliance . I finally just gave up and told them i was just going to get a new refrigerator . Fortunately i looked at your web first ! i typed in the model # and looked up the controller ,here is where the problem was , the part called out by whirlpool isn't what is in my fridge even though the controller in my fridge is the original . so i just went on your web page and looked at all whirlpool Defrost Controllers and like the second one pictured was the one i needed. Even though it is listed none compatible with my machine i was able to zoom in on your web page and compare every circuit ,connector ,voltages listed, it was the exact same part .You guys must have some crazy magic because i ordered the part @ 4pm and the next day @ 2pm the part is at my house. it took 5 min to put in and it has been working great . Your site saved me a lot of money . I should have gone to you sooner. Thanks 

Initially, using the reset procedure for the defrost timer seemed to work (shut off for few minutes, and turn back on), so we replaced the defrost timer board. Also replaced the starting relay and capacitor on general principles. This did not fix the issue (still would not start at all). Talked to a very helpful agent at appliancepartspros.com, and we were able to trace the issue to the thermostat switch (explaining why moving the thermostat control to off and back on sometimes fixed the issue). Shorting the switch resulted in the refrigerator running normally (though continuously). Have now ordered a replacement thermostat switch, which we are confident will fix the issue. The agent was patient and very helpful! Hardest part of the project was getting the control panel bezel off to get at the defrost timer board and thermostat. 

I replaced the Auto-defrost Circuit Board. 

Ordered, and replaced the adaptive defrost control, and the therostat control.
