Ronald P Montgomery Village , MD June 10, 2017 Appliance: Model GENERAL ELECTRIC MODEL JBP78BY1BB ELECTRIC RANGE Broiler burner heated without limit even though all range controls were off had to shut off the house's circuit breaker for the range to shut down the broiler In 20-year-old GE Electric Range Model Model JBP78BY1BB, I replaced the electric control panel for oven. Original GE Part was WB27T10102. Appliance Parts Pro (APP) provided excellent help and directed me to the closest replacement, which was GE Part No. WB27X10311 with APP part no. AP263445. APP's postings of the comments of several other customers who had experienced the same failure (broiler burner will not shut off) were very helpful. The replacement part proved to be a correct electrical replacement, but two differences were observed and had to be accommodated: (1) The range's black wire had to be connected to the location on the replacement control panel marked for the red wire. (Red and black wires, which are each 120 VAC away from the neutral, are interchangeable on a 240 VAC service.) (2) The neutral connector from the range had a plastic insulator on it that was too bulky to enable connecting it to the neutral terminal on the replacement electronic control panel. The insulator dimensions had to be adjusted to enable connection. The schematic wiring diagram packed into this range by GE was very helpful. So was the small wiring diagram packed with the replacement electronic control panel. An examination of the removed failed electronic control panel showed that the contacts on the oven relays (one for the broiler element and one for the bake element) had not welded, so that was not the cause. Such welding is a possible cause of this particular type of failure, as shown in GE owner's manual for this electric range. I contacted GE and offered to send the failed electronic control panel in for identification of its failure mode, because this failure mode is so serious. GE declined my offer. 11 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 2+ hours
