Changing the front control panel actually fixed the problem.
However, when I opened the box and discovered the control panel did not include the solid state circuit board, I thought I was in trouble. I assumed the circuit board malfunctioned as the front panel buttons still operated with a substantial friction click. I was wrong. The new cover panel, when plugged into the old circuit board, actually fixed the problem.
It was relatively easy to make the swap, and these guys have a YouTube channel with the video I needed.
