I accessed the failed control unit by removing the upper fascia, lower door covering and upper housing from the upper fascia in that order. I disconnected the failed unit and reconnected the new unit per instructions. The control unit requires power to be properly programed and that can only happen when door is latched. So I ended up putting the upper housing and lower door cover back on without the fascia. That allowed me to close the door and program the unit, after which I reattached the upper fascia.
