A plastic strip had broken off from somewhere and was found in the tub; it turns out to have been part of the "air inlet" at the bottom of the door, and it probably had broken off due to many years of repeated flexing. Problem was solved by replacing the air inlet. Video instructions for this were very helpful. Lining up small screws with holes in air vent took several attempts. Be careful of sharp edges!
