Searched the dishwasher model on ApplianceParts (had used them for a washing machine repair a few years earlier). Was looking for an exploded diagram of the internal parts so I could figure out what might be the problem. There was a video for a motor seal repair kit that seemed to address the bearings which is what I suspected was the culprit. The video started by noting that "you want to replace the motor seal if 1) you have a leak or 2) your dishwasher is making a noise". I watched the video, ordered the motor seal kit, it arrived in 2 days, I followed the video instructions and was done in about 1.5 hours and it's humming like new. While I was waiting for the parts I removed the filter and cleaned it.
