Got the six year old refrigerator from my daughter because of it freezing up but was in good ( Stainless Steel) shape to replace our 21 year old Kitchen Aid. The thermistor had been replaced as a cheap first step but didn't correct the problem as it totally froze over within five days.
I decided to tear down again and check the defrost heater element which was found to have an open circuit and hence the replacement part. Thanks to AAP, I ordered the part at the weekend, was shipped on Monday by FedEx to Huntsville Al and arrived at 1:13 pm Tuesday -- not bad for 7 day shipping, Heh!!! Great work.
The repair took longer than normal but most was done during the delivery date.
Firstly, the Nylon support bracket failed when being removed, the two single supports broke off but drilling four holes and using nylon Zip ties, it was repaired and much stronger than original. BTW after drilling out the pop-rivet in the back plate, the hex screw had been over tightened and sank into the slot where a nut drives head could not grip it - using a small wood chisel and cutting away around the hole solved the problem but then I had to drill more holes in the bracket and back plate to remount everything. Used four 5/8" stainless steel screws to remount.
TIP, drop a string with a small socket down the RH path and attach to the element to help guide the right leg when feeding the new one back up.
I also cut a 2 inch hole in the front plate, cut a 1/4 inch slice of 2 inch PVC pipe and glued it to a 2 1/4 diameter piece of Lexan to make a view port in the center area of the radiator - more use than the small access port at the top.
The freezer now is functioning perfectly.
Thanks again APP and the other review posted that made the repair go so well.
