The problem could have been the switch or the element. Since the "on" indicator light did operate and since a continuity check of the element required complete removal and dismantling of the whole cook top anyway, I chose to order the element. AppliancePartsPro had a great catalog, good price, and I received the part within two days. I removed the blower motor and its mount simply to facilitate removal of the cook top. Disassembly is easy with the unit turned upside down on a work surface, with careful notation of parts orientation for proper reassembly. I was then able to do a continuity check of the suspected element and confirmed an open in the coil. The replacement part fit perfectly with some good instructions on possible differences in parts applications over the years since my appliance was built.
