Used internet to troubleshoot problem. It was interesting to find out that the gas valve safety feature was controlled by the amount of current drawn by the porcelain igniter. My igniter was glowing but was not drawing the require minimum current of 2.8 amps.
Replacing the igniter resolved the problem.
