I initially thought the problem was in the solenoid valve because it seemed like the ice maker was not getting any water. I ordered the valve; when it came in and I opened the box there was a handy little instruction pamphlet that had a detailed test procedure, most steps of which ended in the words “Do NOT replace the valve.” It required me to move the electrical connector from the paddle switch on the front from one connection to the next, then test by pressing the switch. I soon discovered that my valve was fine, and had to turn my attention to the ice maker unit itself. As it turned out, the drive unit in the ice maker kept sticking in the same spot; you could push on the large gear in the direction of rotation and it would start turning, but stopped at the end of one revolution and stayed there unless you made it move again. I ordered a replacement unit, 15 minutes to take the old one out and put the new one in, and we are back in business. The “how to fix” video on this website was greatly helpful, I watched it before I bought the parts and discovered just how easy the whole process is. Not sure I would have tried it without seeing that first. My only wish is that the instruction set that was in the box with the solenoid valve was posted here to the website somewhere, so I could have done that set of tests first and avoided the need to send this other part back for a refund. Fortunately APP has a great return policy so I get my money back, just have to find the time to go to the UPS store to drop it off.
