The pump impeller had sheared its connection to the motor shaft and the seal had disintegrated. Subsequent running had eaten the plastic motor shaft to about 2/3rds of its original diameter. Motor (and shaft) are no longer available so I filled the gouged area with JB Weld and then filed it down to original size.
