I had no definite indicator that the problem was with the control board, but it seemed that moving the entire control panel would have an effect. Since replacing the board would essentially replace all of the control function, I decided to replace the board. The machine is only seven years old and we are two seniors with no kids at home. Swapping the board took about ten minutes. The problem appears to be fixed and has been used for two days with no recurring failure.
