Michael K Paramus , NJ April 18, 2015 Appliance: Whirlpool LA5580XTW1 Whirlpool Washer La5580xtw1: Replacement of rusty inner basket. How to replace Agitator Grease. Ordered the parts from AppliancePartsPros - super fast shipping, and even though I opted for regular shipping all of my parts arrived the very next day, including the big and bulky inner basket. Disassembly went smoothly, simply following the directions in the AppliancePartsPros video. The only problem I had was that the inner basket simply would NOT come of the drive block no matter what I did. Struggled for a few hours trying to take it off. Then, I called AppliancePartsPros and they said it was not unusual to encounter this, and suggested using "PB Blaster" (which is available at Home Depot) to free it up. I generously sprayed the area where the basket sits on the drive block, waited 15 minutes and then soaked it again. APP said it might take up to 4 applications in 15 minute intervals. After the second spray and soak, the basket lifted of easily! I was amazed to find incredibly amounts of gunk and rust in and around the underside of the basket. Cleaned it all up as well as the plastic outer tub. Installed the new inner basket, locked it down with the spanner and easily reassembled the rest of the machine. Aside from the wrestling match to remove the basket, this would have been about an hour long repair. If you are removing the tub from an older machine, I suggest you just go ahead and pick up some PB Blaster in advance, you'll probably need it (wd40 didn't do the job). You'll probably also want to have the special spanner wrench to remove the locking nut from the driveshaft. It is available from APP as well. All in all the process could not have been smoother - from locating and ordering the parts on APP, to fast shipping, then to great instructions for the repair - all went well thanks to AppliancePartsPros! 30 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 2+ hours
