My Maytag dishwasher model # MDB7749AWM2 has a diagnosis routine where you push 'normal wash' then 'heated dry' three times in quick succession. This made the machine cycle through all the functions. This demonstrated to me that all systems functioned. So I came to the conclusion that it was only the lights/buttons that did not work, and I was right. So I ordered a new Panel Control. (I've seen that many more Maytag's use this same part)
To replace the Panel Control took 9 minutes.
UNPLUG THE POWER BEFORE STARTING. 110V is no joke!!
6 Torx screws need to be removed to get the old control panel off. I needed a #15 torx bit.
After removing the old panel from the DW door - hanging by a few bundles of wire - you'll need to remove the latch (one screw and two clips, I think) and the Electronic Control (two clips). Basically everything on the old panel was swapped to the new panel. It helps if someone holds the old and new panel while swapping the parts out.
Note: the steam vent in the door was a little crooked and didn't line up with the gasket well. A little turn and it was straight and level and made a good seal. This will help keep steam moisture out of the controls, prolonging the lifespan of the parts.
Got it all back together, plugged in the machine, crossed my fingers and it worked.
I won big point with my wife. And it was 50x easier than replacing the DW.
I've heard the service man will charge you $100+ labor for this. 9 minutes of work... come on!
Anyway, it was VERY easy. Just remember to unplug you machine before ever working on it.
