At first I read the error code as 5Y CE. Googled that and found a number of distressed pleas for the same interpretation. Finally I found a technician/interpreter of mysterious codes who enlightened me: SY CE means there is a communication error between the display board and the main power control board.
Meanwhile, we had unplugged it, waited 10 or 15 minutes, then plugged it back in, The refrigerator responded like a computer reboot and started working again. No error code! We bump knuckled each other and congratulated ourselves on a job well done.
A couple of hours later the wily refrigerator reversed fortunes and we were looking at the SY CE error code again. An online pay-per-question technician told me we needed to replace the main control board and gave us the part number 5303918563. I Googled that and found Appliance Parts Pros had a part that replaced the original. They even checked it against our refrigerator model number to confirm it would work which impressed me no end. They also guaranteed the fastest processing and delivery time that I could find. Which they delivered on.
UNPLUG the refrigerator and remove the lower vent panel below the doors. Denny tilted the refrigerator back slightly and I slid in a short 4X4 under each side to prop the front up for more working room. There is a square plastic box mounted to the bottom of the refrigerator with 1 screw going up in front of the box. Remove that screw and the box will pull forward and out.
Denny had several moments of consternation because the new box was a slightly different configuration from the original. I had forgotten to tell him this was a generic board that replaces the original. It took a small leap of faith that we had the piece we needed.
The directions were pretty good once we decided we had the correct box. Our only confusion was on #4. We thought we were supposed to do something different, but that single (grey in our case) connector had been connected directly to the board in the old box, too. We were looking all around the board for J9 A1 before discovering Figure 2 in the directions has a big snowy white arrow pointing to the terminal!
We took advantage of the underneath of the refrigerator being exposed and vacuumed all the dust out. It looked like a Halloween horror set under there. The hardest, most time consuming part of the repair was directions #5: Folding all those wires into the box and screwing the box back underneath the refrigerator without any of them escaping! We removed the 4X4s, plugged the machine in and have had an error free 5 days.
