James M Kinnelon , NJ December 19, 2015 Appliance: Model GE JGP389BEV1BB Ge cooktop downdraft turned on whenever left burners were turned on spark igniter only worked on 2 of 4 burners After an exhaustive Internet search, I found someone who had taken apart my model cooktop and referred to his pictures. I had also found similar models where the downdraft went on inappropriately. That fix was easy, just finding the control switch and ensuring good contact with the burner apparatus. After that I took off the burner knobs and pried up the control panel with a small straight slot screwdriver. My spark igniters were 4 discreet pieces rather than a complete harness, with the left having additional controls to turn on the downdraft. By swapping around the like igniters I was able to identify the two that were defective, and ordered those from your site. The right replacement was easy, just switched it out. The left one looked a bit different than mine, and when I swapped it out the igniter clicked throughout the turn, rather than just at the light position. I removed it and looked it over more. While the old one had a blue center ring on top and a white in the middle, on the replacement part those center rings were reversed. On a hunch I swapped the wires so that the ones that had gone to the blue centered portion went to the middle instead of the top part of the switch, and it worked normally! Reassembly was quick and easy, and all in all, the repair only took about an hour once I had the parts.
