Bobby L Osceola , AR January 09, 2016 Appliance: Model 796.41473210 My problem was with a front load kenmore washing machine i had to replace the door/tub gasket Initially did a uTube search for specific instructions on dismantling this machine for this repair. I had successfully replaced a door/tub gasket on a Whirlpool front load machine previously. Did not find specific uTube instructions for this Kenmore. So began removing parts using past learned info on what needed to be removed first, second, and last. Removed the top, detergent dispenser screws/control panel, then the front (with a couple hidden screws around drain pump filter) and the front gasket retainer. This Kenmore gasket is more sophisticated than the one I'd replaced on the Whirlpool. So, before I could remove the back retainer for this gasket, I had to remove 4 hose clamps and hoses. No big deal. Just need a pair of pliers. After removing the four hoses, I focused on removing the tub side retainer for the gasket. Both gasket retainers for this boot are similar, spring tension wire. The front retainer can be rolled off with a flat screw driver. It is a piece of wire held together with a spring. It does not separate. The rear retainer has a hook and loop design, sort of like the old screen door latches we (I'm 69) once used. It was a bit difficult to remove without damaging. Had to stop and think for awhile. I know there should be a tool for these clamps, but I could not find one. There is a extra loop near the hook side on this rear clamp. So I took a piece of mechanics wire (bailing wire), ran it from this hoop and the latching hoop, and twisted the mechanics wire with a pair of pliers to relieve the spring pressure enough to unlatch the hook. It worked and my mechanics wire broke as I removed the rear clamp.... Pulled the old gasket off. During the process of removing the rear clamp I noticed that I'd have a problem installing the new gasket with the tub weights in place. Started trying to install the new gasket. Had to quit and remove the two tub weights. The weights are easy to remove. After removing the weights, started installing the gasket again, making sure it's tub side lip fitted correctly to the lip of the tub basket. Could not have done this with the weights in place. Installed the tub side gasket retainer. Again there should be a tool for this. Don't want to damage the new gasket. I used some more bailing wire to anchor one end of the spring clamp, and some 1/8" nylon rope, and my Wife to help pull the rope while I latched the screen door. Took me a hour or more to figure this technique. Worked surprisingly well. Wife also helped roll the front gasket clamp in place. Results - No damage to new gasket. Have tested the washer. No leaks. I forgot to mention, when one starts installing this gasket, one needs to get it aligned correctly from the start, otherwise the 4 hose connections will not align. Found that a little Windex sprayed on the inner tub lip of the gasket helps. Gasket is very sticky! Again, I'll be 69 years of age tomorrow (Sunday 01/10/2016), My hand and finger strength is now low. But I've learned the theories of leverage. I've learned patience. Stop and think. Have worked as a fixer of things broken all my life. So, despite my fragility, I managed to complete this fix. AppliancePartsPro supplied me this gasket and my previous Whirlpool gasket. Plus many other parts in the past. Have been totally satisfied with their products but mostly their quick shipping time.
