I replaced defrost timer (which I am glad I did because of wear on the points) but that did not cure the problem. So after checking other components, I found that the temperature control was the culprit. No problem, I will simply order part # 2162521100. The door to our freezer was sagging due to the a nylon bearing wearing out on the bottom hinge. The sagging door prevented a good seal. I replaced the bottom bearing, and the door seals perfectly.
