Icemaker stopped working David K. • Haymarket , VA • July 11, 2016
GE bottom freezer icemaker stopped working for the 2nd time. Refrigerator bought in 2008, replaced (first time) icemaker in 2009 by GE tech for $450, after 7 years 2nd ice maker failed I decided to attempt replacing the icemaker myself. Purchased a replacement icemaker that comes as a kit. I replaced the water valve and the icemaker unit with in 30 minutes and I had ice the next day. Easy peasy for less than $140. The R134 Drier is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. This component plays a critical role in the refrigeration system by removing moisture and contaminants from the refrigerant, ensuring efficient cooling and preventing damage to other parts of the system. It helps maintain the purity and effectiveness of the refrigerant as it cycles through the system.
You should replace the R134 drier if it becomes clogged or damaged. Common causes of a bad drier include wear and tear over time, exposure to moisture, or contamination from other failing components in the refrigeration system.
Symptoms of a bad R134 drier include:
- Reduced cooling efficiency
- Frost buildup on the evaporator coils
- Unusual noises from the refrigeration system
- Increased energy consumption
- Refrigerator not maintaining the set temperature
This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Order a new defrost timer from ApplianceParts online. I received the parts in a couple of days, installed it and that completely fixed the problem.
