Liked hint of using locking pliers to grab spring.
I hope I would have thought of that myself, but maybe not before busting a knuckle.
Washer works perfectly now, better than when it was new.

The agent was very helpful and emailed me a diagram. I would have liked a picture of the part just to be sure, but the right part was ordered and showed up very quickly.
