For Frigidaire Refrigerator Defrost Timer (Part Number: OEM7778730)

Rebecca for Model Number FFHT1831QS3

Suddenly, my freezer is building up frost/ice throughout (ceiling/floor/shelves/back wall). The freezer vents are not blocked, and the unit isn’t overloaded. All parts of the evaporator system is covered in frost and ice, as well as the thin copper pipe attached to on the upper right, surrounding wiring, etc.It appears the black insulating material has ripped on the copper element. The ice heaving seems to have deformed some lighter metal (aluminum?) parts, but they appear functional. After a complete defrost, the frost/ice builds back up within 24 hours, and continues to accumulate until another manual defrost. Periodically, I hear the freezer fan come on and turn. It's noisy- assuming from the blades being covered in ice/frost. I hear air blowing in the refrigerator, although after the frost/ice builds to a certain point, the refrigerator no longer cools, until the freezer is manually defrosted. Once defrosted, most of the resulting water will drain away, although some will drip into the refrigerator from the drain in the middle of the freezer that the back wall panel sits in. Narrowed this down to potentially to the evaporator hater and/or thermostat. Does this seem correct, or could other parts be in play?

Rebecca, it would be recommended that the freezer door gasket 242193209 be checked for an air gap that would allow warm air to enter into the freezer. The most common cause of frost accumulating on the entirety of a freezer is from warm moist air coming through.

Michael, This issue sounds like it would be caused by a faulty defrost timer that would need to be replaced.

Mike, if the compressor and condenser fans are not operating, it is possible that the defrost timer 215846604 is stuck in a defrost cycle. If the compressor is operating and there is no cooling in the refrigerator, it is likely that there is a defrost heater 242044007 or thermostat 5303918202 issue that can be tested. The defrost thermostat should have continuity when the evaporator is frozen and the heater should measure 35 Ohms. If the heater and defrost thermostat test good but the evaporator is blocked up with ice, the defrost timer has failed.

Dennis, Thanks for the question!!! No, it is not a replacement for that timer. Your model number does use the 5304518034 5304518034 Timer.

James, if the temperature control knob is set to the recommended setting, the temperature should be at 37°F. If it is set to the coldest setting, it can reach as low as 34°F. In regards to periodically warming, every 8 hours of compressor run time, the unit will go into a defrost mode which can cause the unit to warm up to about 42°F. As the unit is exceeding those temperatures, the failure would most likely be in the thermostat control 297415203.

Hello Dennis, The water in the defrost drain should evaporate during the operation of the unit from the heat from the compressor operation. If the unit is not in a controlled climate there may be too much moisture in the air for the water to evaporate and if temperatures are too low, the water will never get hot enough to evaporate.

Omar, The defrost timer should not need any calibration, just hook it up and let it go, (automatic).

If there were a model number on the label inside the freezer this would be a lot easier but I have to go by parts numbers. In this case I am pretty sure I have to replace the defrost timer since I have replaced the heater and thermostat already. I am having one problem. the part number on my timer is 241705101 It is a 10 hr 30 min timer as opposed to the 6 hour 23 min timers I see for models that I think are mine. The wiring pattern appears to me the same. I cannot find a listing for this part so far. Is there another I can use? Perhaps 215846604 It is a Frigidaire and I think it is LFHT1514LW

Freezer too warm (20-22 deg), and Fridge too warm (42-46 deg) -- even with Cold Control knob fully clockwise. Replaced Run Capacitor. Also, have new Defrost Timer to try tomorrow if Run Capacitor affects no change. Is there a fine adjustment screw on Cold Control I should try? Or is a new Cold Control the next step? Or... should I check Evaporator Coils in the freezer? (FYI: Evaporator Fan is blowing cold air -- albeit not cold enough. And there is no noticeable ice in the rear of freezer. Also... Condenser Fan appears clean, intact and running well, as do Condenser Coils.) .

David, no there is no longer "a fine adjustment screw on Cold Control" the manufacturers eliminated that adjustment tool several years ago. We don't "see" replacing the defrost timer as a remedy to the situation, it sounds more like an airflow problem or a sealed system issue, based on your description and information. Remove the evaporator cover and check the evaporator coils for an even and complete frost pattern on the complete evaporator (front to back and top to bottom) if there are uneven, less or no frost in areas of the evaporator, this would indicate a sealed system issue or inefficient compressor. If all's OK, then consider the cold control.
