For Ge Refrigerator Defrost Timer (Part Number: OEM6185133)

1 Answer

Gerri, It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Carl, Unfortunately there is not a service manual available for your unit. The most likely cause for the unit staying in defrost would be the defrost timer that is causing the issue.

Dru, This unit does not have a defrost timer. The defrost control is part of the main control board WR55X10942C for your unit. If you are having a defrost issue you will want to check the defrost thermostat WR50X10068 to make sure that it is not open. Check the defrost heater WR51X10042 to make sure that it has continuity. Check the defrost thermistor WR55X10025 resistance. The resistance of the thermistor at 0 degrees should be 42.2K ohms of resistance, at 37 degrees would be 14.4K ohms and 77 degrees would be 10 k ohms. If out of range then it would need to be replaced. If this checks ok and the thermostat and heater have continuity then the control board would need to be replaced.

Hello Al, If the temperature control WR09X20002 has failed, the fans and compressor will never come on. If the defrost timer WR9X502 fails, the unit would either never go into defrost or would never come out of the defrost cycle. It does, however, turn the fans and compressor off during defrost and back on at the end of the defrost cycle.

Hello Ronald. If the noise is coming from the fan motor, you will need to look for parts rattling against things. If none is found, replace the fan motor.

Dinosauro, The timer does not need an adjustment after installation. The timer will automatically advance once installed. If the unit does not cycle on immediately then it will cycle on within about a half hour.

Joe for Model Number tbx18kkg

Not cooling. Top freezer will get to about forty degrees, not enough to freeze anything. Refrigerator compartment will get about fifty degrees. That is with everthing turned to coldest setting. Thermostat checks good. I hooked a volt meter to the wires going to the heater. Manually put it in defrost, got about 39 to 40 volts. Should there be 110 volt there? I hooked a cord to the heater and plugged it in to an outlet and in about three m inutes or so the heater glowed red. Any info will be welcomed.

Hello Joe, If the unit is warm and no frost present, the defrost circuit will have nothing to do with the unit being warm. You should make sure the compressor is running. If not, check the start relay, (if you shake it and it rattles, it is bad). If the compressor is running, you most likely have a sealed system issue, (restriction or Freon loss).
