The Door Switch is an OEM part for GE dryers, designed to ensure the dryer does not operate when the door is open. This safety feature is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the appliance operates efficiently and safely. The switch signals the dryer's control system about the status of the door—if it's open or closed—thereby allowing or preventing the start of a drying cycle.

Causes of damage to the door switch often include mechanical wear from repeated use, accidental damage from loading or unloading, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Door Switch include:

  • The dryer not starting when the door is closed
  • The dryer continuing to run when the door is opened
  • Unusual noises or the dryer stopping mid-cycle

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Jerry, You will need a Phillips head screwdriver and a pair of needle nosed pliers. First and most important, discontinue the power supply to the unit by either turning the breaker off or unplugging the unit. Next, open the door and look straight up. There are two screws that hold the main top on. Remove these two screws and remove the top by lifting slightly and shifting it to the left. Now there are two screws, one on the left and one on the right you can see by looking down into the top. They screw in directly back toward you. Be careful not to drop them. The heads of these can use a Phillips or a square bit. Once these are out, lift the front panel slightly and pivot the front panel around, being careful of the wires. I never disconnect any as it is not necessary for this job. Now, to prevent miswiring, write down the color of the wires in the sequence they are connected for reassemblies' sake. Use the needle nosed pliers to remove the wires. Depress the tabs on the sides of the old door switch and it will come out. Reassembly is the exact reverse of the disassembly process.

Hi Nana. It can be both ways that the door switch will close the circuit to the machine and not allow the light to come on if that part of the switch internal connections are not making correctly. Door switch is part # WE4M415. Make sure your light bulb part # WE05X20431 is good also. Thank You.

Hello D. Murphy. You will need to remove the front panel from the unit to replace the door switch WE4M415. You will remove the top panel to gain access to the screws securing the front panel. Then remove the front panel and squeeze the tabs holding the switch onto the panel. Reinstall with the new switch in reverse order. You will need a flat blade, and a screwdriver, and some pliers to do the repair. Hope this helps.
