John, unfortunately, there is not a different approach to this. It is possible that a threadlock has been used on the threads which would require more torque to unscrew the knob.

David P. for Model Number WSXH208V1WW

The part Part Number GE AP204450 broke on my washer. I have been able to replace parts as needed, but not sure by looking at this part how is will be installed, ie not sure what tools are needed and how to get the one that is broken off the machine. Prefer not to pay $$$$ for something I can do easily with the correct tool, but I can't see how the part comes off or goes back on. Help would be great so I know I can order it and install it myself. Thanks

Hello David. The old knob unscrews off the timer shaft, and the new one screws onto the timer shaft. Hope this helps.
