The Light Socket is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. It is responsible for holding the refrigerator's light bulb and ensuring it receives power to illuminate the interior when the door is opened.

You should replace the light socket if it becomes faulty. Causes of a bad light socket can include wear and tear from regular use, electrical issues such as short circuits or power surges, and corrosion from moisture exposure.

Symptoms of a bad light socket include:

  • The refrigerator light not turning on when the door is opened
  • Flickering or intermittent light operation
  • Visible damage or corrosion on the socket
  • The light bulb not fitting securely or falling out

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

For Ge Light Socket (Part Number: OEM6182778)

Ben for Model Number HTR16ABSHRWW

I am a trouble shooter electrician with some knowledge of refrigeration trouble shooting. My tenant damaged my new hotpoint refrigerator and I need to fix it, I found the problem with temp control (rusted due to water damaged) also light socket missing and wires pulled. Do they sell whole complete part with temp control, light and the other stuff that comes with it. If they come I can just plug the wires to the connector and screw it up to the body.

1 Answer

Ben, The control section does not come as a whole but you would have to order the parts individually.

Then remove the inner control bracket that covers the light socket part # WR2X9391. The socket is held into place by screw mounts. Remove the screw and remove the socket. Thank You.

Hi. Remove the top shelf. Turn the unit off. Remove the knobs. Remove the control cover. Inside is the bulb part # 8009 and the socket. The pars view does not clearly show how to access the socket but you may need to remove another inner cover to release the socket part # WR2X9391 from its push in tabs and replace it. It is an easy process. Thank You.

Reece C. for Model Number TB14SCB

Thank you for all the help so far. I'm pretty handy and just want to be sure of the order of steps I need to take to take to do this bulb socket switch. First I remove both fridge and freezer doors. Then I remove screws holding center mullion in place. This should allow me to remove mullion and bottom floor of freezer to access area for bulb socket replacement. Is there anything else I need to know or anything else you can suggest at this point?

Hello Reece. According to the manufacture that is correct. Under the freezer floor there is a piece of Styrofoam that will need to be removed to access the socket WR2X9391. Hope this helps.

Hi Elaine. You will have to remove the power to the unit. Then you will have to remove the light cover lens, and bulb. Then un clip the holding fingers which hold it to the back cover. This will allow the socket to fall back into the evaporator area. then you will need to remove the 4 - back wall screws to access the socket assembly, and replace. Your socket is part # WR2X9391. Thank you.
