The Temperature Sensor is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators, designed to accurately monitor and relay the temperature inside the refrigerator and freezer compartments to the electronic control board. By detecting the slightest changes in internal temperature, the sensor allows the control board to make real-time adjustments to the cooling system, activating the compressor and fans as needed to maintain optimal conditions for food preservation.

Over time, the temperature sensor can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or general wear and tear. A malfunctioning sensor can lead to improper temperature regulation, affecting the efficiency of the refrigerator and the freshness of stored food.

Symptoms of a bad Temperature Sensor include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer not maintaining the set temperature
  • The appliance running continuously or more frequently than normal
  • Inaccurate temperature readings displayed

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Temperature Sensor (Part Number: OEM9556230)

1 Answer

Kevin, based on the information provided, the refrigerator thermistor would be causing the unit to call for cold air too much, causing this failure. Replacing the thermistor WR55X10025 would be the correction.

John Z for Model Number PSC23MGPCWW

My refrigerator shut down the compressor is not running. the temperture control digital buttons are off but the lights are on in the refrigerator and freezer. I turned off the power for 3 minutes and reconnected the power cord and that worked for about 24 hours then the conpressor and ice maker turned off but inside lights stay on. I tried to turn off the breaker waited 30 minutes but this time the refrigerator did not turn on. I saw your video about replacing the temperture thermostat control switch and wanted to know if that should solve the problem. Not the Motherboard for the (digital temp control setting buttons) which is what a repair tech said he thinks is the problem from his experience with this issue. I only spoke with him on the phone and he said he would come to my home to fix it in about 20 minutes tops. I did not see any Motherboards listed on your Parts list and feel like this guy is trying scam me. Thank you for your expert advice. John Zale

John Z, Based on the information provided this does sound as if there is a problem with a control board and the main control board does affect both the compressor and the lights. Using the tech sheet supplied with the refrigerator and a multimeter you could check for power out to the compressor when it should be running and you can check the resistance of the temperature thermistors to determine the cause of the issue. The main board for this model is our part number WR55X10942C

Nikki, the model provided does have a thermistor WR55X10025 in the evaporator section. The evaporator will be located in the freezer at the top just above the fan and will require the cover panels to be removed.

Dan Hirst for Model Number ZISB420DMA

I have an older GE Monogram ZISB420DMA fridge that is not meeting temps. The technical sheet that came with the fridge says there are 4 temp sensors in the unit. 2 in the FF, 1 in Freezer, and one on Evap coil. I have found and replaced 3 of the 4, but cannot find access to the 4th on the evap cooler. I watched the video attached for this unit, but the evap cooler is within the freezer. On my unit there is a section above the fridge that has the compressor coil on one side and evap coil on the other side (I think), but that section is fully enclosed in a metal housing and does not look accessible at all. Seems like replacing this 4th temp sensor is my missing link, but can't seem to find it or access it. Please help.

Dan, The evaporator is in the ceiling of the freezer compartment. You will need to remove the screws holding the panel in place where the evaporator fand motor is in order to access the evaporator.

Hello Greg, check that the compressor and condenser fan is running, if so then there may be a defrost problem with evap coils in the freezer section, check the frost condition of the coils.

Adam, Check the evaporator for a frost pattern from top to bottom. If there is very little frost to no frost then it would be a sealed system issue and would need to have service to repair.

Michelle, It would be recommended to check the temperature sensors in the unit to ensure that they are good and if the sensors are good then it is possible that the main board is not reading the sensors correctly.

Angela, Thanks for the question!!! There could be several causes. The first thing to check is to verify the evaporator fan WR17X12490 is running. If so you will want to check the coils for an abundant amount of frost which would indicate a defrost issue. Check this video out for more troubleshooting help: https://youtu.be/fFNi50tdeto
