Manufacturer Part Number: 6R8MD3

A PTC starter that helps engage a compressor's start winding for reliable motor startup and shorter run-up. Use this direct-replacement thermistor when the compressor struggles to start or only hums instead of running. What it does:

  • Provides a timed reduction in start-circuit resistance so the compressor motor can start smoothly.
  • Helps prevent continuous start winding current after the compressor runs, protecting the motor.
  • Common symptom fixes: compressor hums, won't start, or system cycles without cooling.
  • Works as the electrical start device used in many refrigeration and small motor applications.
What's included:
  • One PTC starter (single thermistor start device).
Install notes:
  • Disconnect all power before attempting replacement; risk of shock or equipment damage.
  • Match the starter to the original part and wiring; replace only with the correct part number.
  • Handle terminals carefully; do not short or bend leads.
  • This is a non-serviceable component — replace rather than attempt repairs.

Charles, You will want to make sure that you are getting 120 vac to the PTC relay. If not then you most likely have a bad thermostat. If so then either the PTC relay is faulty or the compressor is bad.

Barbara, You will want to check to make sure that there is power getting to the compressor. If there is not 120 vac getting to the compressor then you would need a new thermostat. If there is power to the compressor and the compressor is not running then do an amp draw on the compressor and if it you have higher than 6 amps then the compressor is locked up. Also could be the PTC starter that has failed.

Hello Lily. If the compressor is running, and the unit does not cool, it is a sealed system issue.
