The Retaining Ring is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dryers and washing machines. This retaining ring holds the rear wheels on the axels of the washer or dryer. 

Symptoms of a bad retaining ring can include wear and tear over time, damage due to accident or impact, or corrosion affecting the structural integrity.

Causes of a bad retaining ring dryer include:

  • Excessive vibration or movement of the drum during operation 
  • Noise or banging sounds from loose components   
  • Deformation or cracking of the retaining ring itself
  • The dryer door not closing properly

Hello Nick, From the picture on the graph, this ring looks like it is about 1/2 inch. The only way to know for sure would be to use a micrometer on the shaft this ring fits onto.

Rick, While the belt being loose could cause the unit to make a rattling type noise but the springs, an off balance load or unlevel unit would cause the washer to be wobbly.

Chip, The idler pulley does not pull away from the belt when not in use there is always tension on it. If there is a piece of the belt missing then that is most likely the cause of the unit not engaging properly.

Billy, Sorry but, we need a bit more information to assist you properly. Could you get us a complete model number, from the serial tag on the washer. There are a couple of different versions of your washer and 5800aww isn't enough for us to research your issue. With a damaged or missing self levelling assembly, that would explain most of the vibration. If a pulley was missing, the washer wouldn't operate, so we'll need to determine what or where the pulley came from. Thanks

Deisy, If there is an issue with a retaining ring, on any product, the ring will usually dislodge from the groove and fall off or out the shaft of the component being held in place. A badly worn ring in most cases can still be used, but it's best to replace it. Good Luck and Thanks
