For Whirlpool Refrigerator Control Board (Part Number: OEM18071193)

Cody for Model Number KRMF706ESS00

About 6 months apart from each other and we opened the doors and no lights turn on and there is a faint clicking sound in the back like something is trying to start, but isn’t. I unplug it for 10-15 minutes and plug it back in and lights start working and compressor and fan kicks on and works like normal. In between these two time we came home and lights were working, but wasn’t cooling like normal and it was making a growling sound. That time I unplugged it, looked at the coils and they were really dirty so I blew them out. Plugged it back in and everything started working fine. Everything I look at leans to the main control board. Do you think that is the case for all 3 of these instances or what is your opinion?

1 Answer

Cody, This issue would most likely be a control board issue with the lights not working and the compressor not starting. The fact that you can unplug it and plug it back in and it will start working then the control board would need to be replaced.

Hello Dave, thanks for reaching out to AppliancePartsPros.com This is more likely to be a low voltage DC component that has failed and is dragging on the system. The usual suspects are the user interface set into the top of the left hand deli drawer WPW10769076, the fridge or freezer evaporator fans, and the ice box fan. That Deli UI is the easiest to check, reset the fridge, clear any error messages on the front display, and open that left hand drawer. If the Deli UI is off you can pop it out, disconnect it and look for water or corrosion in the drawer front itself. You can leave that Deli UI disconnected and just pop it back into the housing, then let the fridge run to see if the issue has gone away.

Bill, it would be recommended that the freezer thermistor W10316760 and refrigerator thermistor W11087438 be tested for resistance from the main control after unplugging the power cord. At connection P5, the refrigerator thermistor would be tested from the gray wire to the white wire, and the freezer thermistor from the tan wire to the brown wire. At room temperature, the thermistors should show a resistance of 2700 Ohms. At 36°F, there should be a resistance around 7964 Ohms. If a thermistor fails testing, it would need to be replaced. If they both pass testing, it is possible that there is a sealed system failure that would require an EPA-certified technician to diagnose and repair the unit.

Bill, if the freezer thermistor W10316760 tests good for resistance, the failure would most likely be caused by the main control WPW10675033. The thermistor resistance is as follows: 77°f = 2700 Ohms ±5.0%, 32°f = 7964 Ohms ± 1.0%, 0°f = 23.345 Ohms ± 2.0%.

Luann for Model Number KRMF706EBS01

We have had two issues with our refrigerator. One, the lights periodically go out and we cannot dispense water/ice. After shutting the power off for several minutes, the lights will go back on and the refrigerator will function "normally". Sometimes we have to do this several times before they work. The other issue is the freezer does not defrost (has been this way for almost a year). Ice builds up on the outside of the cover panel and then in the coils. After the ice is removed the process has to be repeated every six to seven weeks. The heating element has tested to be good. This model does not have a defrost timer. Kitchen aid customer support is worthless and we have no technician service available in our area.

Luann, Thanks for your question, and based on the information provided your model refrigerator has a self-diagnostic mode. The information for this function is listed in the tech sheet that came packaged with your refrigerator. I recommend running the diagnostics to see what error codes may be listed. The description of both the issues you describe sounds like a main control board issue.

Tim for Model Number KRMF706ESS01

My Kitchen Aid refrigerator will periodically shut off. The compressor shuts off, ice and water in the door stop working, the lights inside the fridge don't come on. The only indication that there is still power is that the lights on the water/ice dispenser in the door come on when I push the dispense arm. Also, the buttons on the water/ice dispenser work. I have to cut power to the refrigerator for about 3-5 minutes and it typically starts working normally. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Tim, Based on the symptoms, this issue will be a faulty main control board on the unit that will need to be replaced.

I do not have any water or ice being dispensed. All the lights are not working either. A technician had me unplug the fridge for 12 hours in an attempt to reset and defrost the coils ( not sure if that was a problem or not but that's what they recommended). I plugged it in this morning, and nothing has changed. He also said the compressor was working. The inside is cold, and the freezer is still working. Are these functions of the main control board?

1 Answer

Cheryl, Thanks for the question!!! Yes, this would likely be a main control issue.

Jonnie, You will want to check the evaporator coils for this and see what the frost pattern is. If there is very little frost with the compressor running then this will be a sealed system issue and you will need to have service.
