This compressor start device engages the compressor at startup and guards it from overheating. Replacing a weak or failed device can restore reliable compressor starts and stabilize cooling performance. What it does:

  • Supplies the initial start current to the compressor, then transitions to run via a PTC relay
  • Protects the compressor by opening the circuit if current draw or temperature is excessive
  • Helps with: compressor won't start, repeated clicking from the rear, warm/not cooling temperatures, or a rattling/burnt start device
What's included:
  • One start device assembly
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; work in a well-ventilated area
  • Access the device at the compressor, note wire locations/orientation before removal
  • Safely discharge any start/run capacitor per manufacturer procedure
  • Push the new device fully onto the compressor terminals, secure any cover, then restore power and verify operation

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Device (Relay/Overload Combo) (Part Number: OEM18046752)

Jim B for Model Number KitchenAid KUIS18NNTS2 Icemaker

Icemaker will run then shutdown for a while, then startup again. and shut down again after awhile. When the unit shuts down, all power to the controls is lost including the bin light. Do you think this a faulty start relay and overload combo device, or is this a faulty compressor triggering the overload protection? The unit was working good and making lots of ice until this problem. When the unit comes back on the compressor is working and the evaporator gets cold, and tries to make ice. I noticed that the evaporator plate has a brownish stain on the face that hasn't been there upon previous cleaning. The stain is similar to an over heating color.

1 Answer

Jim, The entire unit shutting down, including lights would not be caused by a overheating issue of the compressor overload tripping. This issue would more likely be caused by a faulty control board or a wire harness issue.
