The Air Diffuser is an OEM component for Whirlpool refrigerators. Located inside the refrigerator compartment, it distributes cold air evenly to all storage shelves and ensures balanced temperatures throughout the space.

Causes of a bad air diffuser can include cracks in the plastic housing from years of fluctuating temperatures or jammed louvers obstructing optimal circulation patterns.

Symptoms of a bad air diffuser include:

  • Warm or cooler spots noticed on certain shelves
  • Faster melting of ice packs or frost buildup in some areas
  • Increased humidity causing moisture condensation issues

This Whirlpool replacement part is also compatible with KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, and select Kenmore models.

Myra, as the diffuser W11164593 would be the only moving part in the refrigerator section, it is very likely that it is the cause. It is likely that there is a stripped gear that is grinding when the diffuser is opening or closing.

Hello Shawna, This sounds like the unit is short cycling. I would first try replacing the defrost thermostat WPW10225581. The unit should also sit idle for several minutes after the defrost thermostat opens to allow time for the melted frost to make its' way down the defrost drain. I would also check for any possible air leaks which would add room humidity which would cause excessive frost buildup. It is doubtful that the diffuser would have anything to do with the frost accumulation.
