Manufacturer Part Number: 12002792

This surface burner ignition switch with protective shield mounts on the gas valve stem. When you turn the knob, it closes the circuit to the spark module to ignite the burner and the shield helps protect the switch from spills. What it does:

  • Triggers the spark module to create a spark when the surface burner knob is turned
  • Shield helps protect the switch from moisture, grease, and heat
  • Typical symptoms of a failed switch: no spark, intermittent sparking, or continuous clicking
  • One switch is used per burner valve; replace only the failed switch(es)
What's included:
  • 1 ignition switch with protective shield
Install notes:
  • Disconnect electrical power and shut off gas supply before servicing
  • Pull the knob straight off and remove the control/manifold panel to access the switch
  • Transfer wires one at a time to the new switch; align on the valve stem and position the shield correctly
  • Reassemble, restore power and gas, and verify proper spark at each burner

For Whirlpool Ignition Switch With Shield (Surface Burner), Single (Part Number: OEM12028992)

David, With a multimeter check at the L1 to N at the spark module with the surface burner switches on. You should have 120vac at that point with any one of the switches in the on position. If you have the 120vac then it is the module or the wiring to the ignitors. If you don't have the 120vac the issue is the wiring to and /or through the surface burner wiring or switches.

Hello Bob. To gain access to the ignitor switches on this model, it looks like you will need to remove the screws by the valve stems (under the knobs) to enable you to raise the top without raising the manifold. The valves mount on the manifold between the gas manifold and the main top. Hope this was helpful!
